summer ski storage

Summer Vacation for your skis, boots and other ski related stuff

First, a concept for you to consider:  your skis and boots like to be stored in the same environment as you live in, that is – inside your home.   Not stored in your attic or basement.

Here is a list of steps to take for storing your skis, boots, helmet, ski bag and boot bag over the summer months.

Skis:

Clean your skis, remove any dirt and rust, clean the bottom of the ski, some suggest with a soft wire brush, others suggest light sand paper, but mainly you need to get the bases clean enough to get to the real base of the ski.  This way the nice new coat of glide or heavy wax you put on before you store them away will be on the base and help your skis not rust and not dry out.

If you are a real pro about your skis, some suggest a coat of wax on the base, wait a bit, then brush that down with a nylon brush, wait a bit, apply a second coat of wax including going over the metal edges which helps prevent rust.  Let that all dry well, then store your skis away.

Boots

Make sure your boots are good and dry, and cleaned up.  Get all the dirt and crude out of the buckles and around the edges.  Pull out the liners and be sure those are good and dry.  Once those are dry, you can put them back into the boots.

Ski Bag/Boot Bag/Helmet

Same thing applies here – be sure the bags for your skis and boots are clean, and DRY.   Take all the stuff out of your boot bag and (1) make sure you still need it those items, (2) make sure it is useful  (a can or tube of wax that is almost empty or dried out – toss it; and buy a new one).  Towels around your skis now living in your ski bag – maybe even consider washing them so they are clean.  (I know it is a concept – what can I say). Then make sure the towels are dry.

Our helmet needs the same care - make sure the straps are clean, as well as the helmet shell and the inside liner is dry.

Goggles -  Same here – clean the lenses, clean the straps, then make sure all is dry. Then put the goggles into their storage bags.

Now you can set about packing your ski bag with skis, poles; as well as your boot bag and helmet.

Lastly, consider finding a place in your home (a closet perhaps); but not the attic (too hot usually) or the basement (too damp and/or musty), and let them enjoy their summer vacation until you need them next ski season.
